The Visit Process

You are welcome to visit the Southeast STD Clinic between the hours of 8:15am and 3:15pm, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.  The SE STD Clinic operates on a walk-in basis and does not make appointments.  The clinic usually has 3-4 clinicians available and average waits are less than 90 minutes.  Depending on the time of day, some waits may be longer or shorter than the average.  Generally, waits are shortest earlier in the day.

When you get to the SE STD Clinic, the person at the front desk will ask for identification and provide a registration form for you to complete.  The personal information on this form will be protected as you will then be given a letter or number to be used as identification while you’re receiving care in the SE STD Clinic.  This is to protect your privacy and confidentiality.

There is no fee for services.

You can make yourself comfortable in the waiting room until your ID number or letter is called.  You will then speak with a counselor, who will discuss with you the visit process, address your concerns, and counsel you about STIs (and, if an HIV test will be ordered, perform mandated pre-test counseling).  After speaking with the counselor, you will have your blood drawn and a rapid HIV test will be performed, if ordered.  Upon completion of the blood lab work, you will visit with the clinician who will take a sexual history, do a comprehensive STI exam, perform any additional lab tests, and prescribe medication, as indicated.

If you are diagnosed with a reportable STI—gonorrhea, chlamydia, chancroid, syphilis, HIV—you will then be referred to the counselor for enhanced counseling, including discussion of how to talk to your sexual partners about their exposure to an STI as well as how to prevent future infections.  After counseling, it’s possible that your blood will be drawn again.  You will also receive any necessary medications and vaccinations, as well as information on follow-up appointments.

Confidentiality

Your records at the SE STD Clinic Clinic are always kept confidential. This means that information regarding testing, diagnosis and treatment services provided at the SE STD Clinic is privileged and will only be released to your treating physician upon request.

All SE STD Clinic staff sign an oath to keep confidential any and all information having to do with our patients. The oath specifically states that staff will not remove files from the SE STD Clinic without authorization and will not divulge any information regarding patients to unauthorized persons. The staff understands that the unauthorized release of information will result in disciplinary action or termination of their employment with the District of Columbia.
